Lets assume granny has a legal conceal carry. The thief pulls a weapon after she initiated the confrontation. She pulls her weapon and shoots him.
Is she in the clear?
If I'm on the jury she is free and clear.
I bet her GoFundMe would be huge.

This right here. The store doesn't care. Why on earth do you? It would be one thing if this was your shop or a store owned by someone you know but trying to stop someone doing this at a big box store is foolish and will get you arrested.
exactly. all these guys coming on here saying they would do something about it.....i dont doubt you as I used to be that away too.....but these stores dont care, why should you put your life or health at risk for them?
if they cared that much they would hire security.
now if its a friends store or something....beat their arse. but if its like best buy, target, walmart etc....yea frick that. they can walk out with whatever for all i care.

Because stealing causes higher prices, which I have to pay.

I haven’t seen this happen in person, but you can damn well expect I wouldn’t put up with it.
The sad part is you would end up being the one who winds up in jail

The way things "are" is because people like you think "it's not my stuff...frick it, let them have it".
I prefer to shoot for the way it should be. That lady showed more balls than the man who was walking behind her.
THIS....the idea that stores have that "it costs more in liability issues than to let the thief walk out the store with the merchandise" is killing us. For the amount of loss each year in these stores, they could hire full-time off-duty police officers to come in for different shifts to put a stop to this nonsense that raises the costs of goods for EVERYONE ELSE. These stores are counting on MOST people being law-abiding citizens, but as the amount of theft continues to increase, it's going to get untenable for them which is where it needs to get to see a change of policy by them.

Should have taken his precious backpack and proceeded to fix the problem…

Honestly, this is pissing me off the number of pussies that put up with this.
Is it security people or management? I'd love to be a fly on the wall during hiring.
Manager: 'Now we don't want to have bad press or get sued. So, your job is to deter the criminal merely by your presence. Don't detain them or harm them in any way.'

I don't think that old lady voted for Biden.

The argument there is that the liability for the store is greater than the cost of the lost merchandise.
I get that, but it still chaps my arse.
One time that may be true, but big drug/convenience stores in SF and LA have closed up completely due to repeated loss.
