quote:You aren’t listening or I’m not communicating well enough for you because as I’ve explained this multiples times now.
No, the threat would be death for not accepting marriage. That's not debatable. If promising death for not doing something isn't a threat, nothing is.
Belonging to the tribe or nation that practices evil and worshipped idols made them guilty and worthy of death once the war ended. These women were not considered innocent or neutral and then given a choice of marriage or death. They were already condemned to die. That’s why the option of marriage was a mercy to them, as their mothers, fathers, and brothers didn’t have that option. It’s also why I gave the example of a woman on death row given the option of life, but you have barely commented on that. I wonder why.
quote:The dishonor was the shaving of her head, cutting of her nails, and removing her clothes which reflected the culture of her native tribe.
Not really, considering "dishonored" was the justification used to avoid slavery (sex slavery, for women). That's why the non-virgins were killed, they're worthless. Once a Hebrew slept with the young girl, she was instantly useless to any other man. If that man doesn't want her, no other man would.
The one month waiting period of not touching her until marriage was to ensure that the man wasn’t just using her for sex but wanted to take her as a wife (including the protection of and provision for her associated with that relationship). Shaving her head and cutting her nails removed some of that beauty as a further temptation against rape or fornication while she was in his house. If he still wanted to be with her after that month, he could marry her, otherwise he had to set her free in her shameful estate as a survivor of a conquered tribe with her glory and beauty removed from her.
quote:No. they were God’s chosen people and not like the pagan nations around them (at least they weren’t supposed to be). They also were not supposed to dishonor God, and sin dishonors God. Heaping dishonor on dishonor is not a good response.
Have a massive free-for-all. Treat themselves just like the pagans. Everyone is sinful and must be punished, right?
quote:Some rape victims were also supposed to marry their rapists. As awful as that sounds, it was because she would have had a harder time finding a spouse to care for her, so the punishment was intended to be for the rapist of being stuck with and having to provide for this woman he shamed while she was to be taken care of. That wasn’t a punishment for the victim but a mercy as she was taken care of. Something similar is at play here. It wasn’t a punishment but a mercy to the women who were already slated for death.
A life where they were married to the men who murdered their families. P-u-n-i-s-h-m-e-n-t.
quote:The part where the girls were threatened into marrying them. You make it seem like they were neutral and were being forced to marry or be punished with death for refusal when in truth they were already marked for death before the marriage option. Like I said, you are continually mischaracterizing the situation.
Which elements of that statement ("But please, keep trying to argue threatened young girls into marrying the men who killed their family isn't punishment.") aren't present in the Biblical verse quoted, or parts of an argument you presented?
quote:Again, the threat of death was already there before the marriage offer.
If that were the case you wouldn't need to threaten them with death. Let them join your community and they'll find a spouse on their own when they're ready
And no, the conquered tribes/nations were not supposed to just roam free with the Israelites because they could corrupt the people to worship idols. This actually happened several times, with the people of Israel falling into idolatry.
