Well, if you're single, you pretty much need one to date. Women like to facebook stalk people they meet before deciding if they seem good enough to go on a date with. If they don't have a facebook page, they often assume that he must be some kind of weirdo, sex offender, or psychopath. Also, most of the common dating apps require a facebook account to use.
Finally, now that newspapers have really cut their budgets on so many things, facebook is the main place to find out about events going on around town like concerts, charity benefits, booze tastings, and art shows.
Cutting one's self off from facebook, especially while college aged and/or single, is basically cutting one's self off from the ability to effectively socialize. There's a huge social stigma attached to not having social media accounts, facebook especially.
