Huffington Post article regarding automation and AI. I'm not shocked as we know this is coming but another reason to seriously consider what's in the very near future.

There is a high probability that automation won't be considered high dollar in the near future. I believe that's the point

Not every doctor and lawyer job will be relegated to autonomous work, but a great deal of background research way very well be. Those professions won't go away, but the demand for that sort of labor will likely fall significantly.
Rather than teams full of low level lawyers pouring through statutes and decisions, an AI program will do that work, filter it to a single human 'quality-checker' who will then send it off to the lawyer arguing the case. A couple lawyers and a program will potentially be able to do the work that previously required a full team.

The job losses in retail and trucking would decimate many communities alone. Are these small businesses going to survive the massive recession?

Huffington Post. This automation shite is getting out of control.
Its not happening this fast.

AI is in its absolute infancy and it's already changing the face of modern business. And it is not far off from completely revolutionizing our capacity to automate common tasks (check out The Master Algorithm by Domingos). Even if the rate of development slows significantly, the rate of impact on society will be extremely rapid.
Yes some new jobs will be created (see my example with the lawyer quality checker). But it seems very unlikely that the new jobs created will outpace the jobs destroyed.

Lol one of their pieces of evidence that doctors will be replaced is the frequency people use WebMD. WebMD leads to MORE doctor's visits because people think they have a brain tumor when it's really a migraine.
The average person has no idea how to diagnose their own illnesses, and differential diagnoses are huge for common nonspecific symptoms. Not to mention, patients are unreliable historians. A knowledgeable person has to take histories and perform physical exams.
Nobody is going to trust their life to a robot anytime soon. Essentially all current automation is designed to be used BY doctors not in place of them - similar to using a calculator.
Will automation impact the profession? Sure. But you aren't going to see mass doctor unemployment any time soon. The profession will adapt.
Lawyers? Who cares? Good riddance.

Nobody 10 years ago would've predicted Uber would employ 300,000 drivers, but they could've easily said, "Duh. We won't have cashiers anymore."
I truly believe that most people with the darkest of predictions about unemployment due to automation are hoping for it because they like the idea of paychecks for nothing and a lifetime of vacay at the expense of the real innovators. If that day comes, Ayn Rand's prophesy will come true.
