Does the Janus decision only apply to public sector unions?

Are unions in businesses affected by today's decision?

Yes. If private citizens want to work for a company that has a union, have at it.

That wasn't the issue.

Huh? Can you explain the difference between a private citizen and a public citizen?

From what I understand, yes.

Private companies can still be an agency shop or a union shop in the US.

One that works for the government = public worker.
One that works independent of the government = private worker.

Ha. Sorry, I meant if a private company wants to deal with a union and people are required to join the union to be employed there, that's fine. Dumb, but fine.

There shouldn't be a requirement for people working in the public sector to be forced to join a union.

The decision still notes that the government can negotiate with union to be the sole entity to bargain employment issues and be binding on all public employees.

The majority opinion just makes it clear that government cannot go the extra step to force public employees to pay fees (i.e. fair share fees) to support the union and may only deduct fees if the public employee voluntarily and affirmatively chooses to make the contribution.
