There is NO QUESTION the left does this because they are so obvious around big events such as elections. For the right, its harder to tell because this board is so predominantly conservative.

TD is mostly smart college educated affluent people that value rational thinking and common sense.
Overall more influential than the population at large, and consistent voters.
A demographic like this will always be a prime target for corruption or demoralization.

I doubt they play the long game like that.
Many were getting called out because of new account creation.
Now they probably identify and hack into old legitimate inactive accounts, like the parasites they are.
Possibly a moderator with that kind of access is involved.
