this is one of the few times he didn't start from a complete advantage and multiple outlets to claim victory
Your presumption about not "starting from a complete advantage," is bizarre.
Interestingly it's a negotiation where your premise only holds if both belligerents want to continue the war. In a scenario where continuation plays into Russian hands (at least for the time being), it would be hard to anticipate Ukraine electively continuing the war. But that's exactly what Dems convinced Zelinskyy to do in Feb.

Graham said he urged Zelenskyy ahead of the meeting with Trump not to "take the bait"

Yes, Trump thought he could stop the war in a day because he thought he could talk some sense into Putin. His plan, roughly, was to give Putin a couple of gifts and then lean on Z.
The problem was Putin. Putin is only interested in taking over all of the Ukraine, something that Trump is only now coming to understand. As a result, despite the fact that Trump has given him enormous concessions Putin continues to not only attack but increase the scope, frequency, intensity, and cruelty of the attacks.
So nothing has changed, just Trump's understanding of it.

That begs the question:
How could it be possible that Trump was the only person on earth who misunderstood Putin?

Excellent question.
My guess is because Trump is the only person outside of Russia, or perhaps Belarus, that considers Putin a friend, and a close one at that. As Trump has said many times, he thought he could talk to his friend.
Well, turns out, Putin is a swine and doesn't give a damn about Trump or his agenda.

He made yall believe he could lol

I believe he is confident enough to think he could. The problem was greater than anyone anticipated. I think he believed both countries really wanted a peaceful end. Now Putin is showing he isn't serious about it. He's going to pay the price for it, but not militarily.
