An accrediting group that has served as a gatekeeper of federal funds to some of the country’s most troubled for-profit colleges has been reinstated by Secretary Betsy DeVos, the Education Department announced Wednesday.

Mrs. DeVos’s decision marks the latest in a series of moves she has taken to bolster for-profit colleges, including a push to reverse regulations that would penalize schools that perform poorly on graduation rates, loan repayment and other criteria.

quote:

A Wall Street Journal analysis found that, among those remaining schools, 24% of students who graduated or left school in 2012 had paid some toward their loan balance after three years, compared with a national average of 46%. That measure is often invoked by experts to determine whether students have benefited from attending a particular school, because the ability to repay loans suggests they’ve achieved financial stability.

Meh.

It's the same as some progressive paying 250k for a gender studies degree from Williams.

Stupid people will always be separated from their money.

So it would be better if they had NO accrediting group?

If the DOE didn't reinstate it the schools would not have access to federal student loans. Do you want your money going down the drain?

Both are monumentally worthless. College needs to go back to being only for above average students.

This.

Of course...when you have "holistic" admissions, that's gonna be tough.

End the federal department of education. Make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy.

No. There needs to be a disincentive to getting worthless degrees.

This.

Pretty much all colleges are a complete rip-off now. 80% of the degrees are meaningless.

I personally hope it all collapses before my kids turn 18.

The only way to stop this IS to make the loans dischargeable in bankruptcy. It would force loan companies to give out loans only based on merit.

When was this ever the case for anything other than Highly selective private colleges? Throughout the 1950s, 60s, 70s, most of the 80s, most state colleges including LSU had open admissions, there was no minimum GPA or ACT score. If you graduated from high school or just had a GED, and took the ACT you were in regardless of score. I know, I was one of them.

Crazy thought here............but just because you have a group that CAN grand accreditation to a for profit doesn't mean it MUST do so.

Seems to me if there is a school that is considered a waste, then don't grant it accreditation. Of course, there are quite a few B&M schools that would be in the firing line too!

To me, letting a kid go equally in debt whether studying engineering or dance is like giving loans for the same amount for pristine waterfront property and shite in the middle of the woods on a 45 degree angle.
