Why did it need to be investigated to begin with is the question. Trump's claim are either baseless at the time he made them, or he received classified information and tweeted about it.
Likely, like you said, Trump just wanted this as a distraction from all of the negativity surrounding him. It amazes me that no one seems to care that Trump accused an ex president of illegal spying for political gain with no proof.
I'll give it to Trump though. He knows how to do the "look at this hand" trick. Meanwhile, his other hand is quietly pushing his EOs and terrible (imo) healthcarec plans through.
Trump is the king of deflecting. He somehow manages to trick people in to thinking all his bad ideas, thoughts, tweets, etc are not his fault while simultaneously taking credit for good things he may or may not have impacted. It's pretty impressive and i am not being facetious when i say that.

The nytimes didn't prove Trump's claim at all. Nor did they say any intercepted communications were used for political advantage or that Obama ordered them.
One of two things happened:
1) Trump made a baseless claim against a former president in a twitter tantrum out of frustration of his own investigations.
2) Trump knows something classified and tweeted classified information to the public.
The one thing he has not done is provide any proof that his claims had any merit.
Do you really not understand this? If there was proof of Trump's allegations wouldn't Obama already be locked up?
This entire investigation was stirred up by Trump himself without proof. So now every single paranoid conspiracy theory Trump spits out on twitter requires a formal congressional investigation?
We need to find out who is leaking confidential information for sure, but the fact Trump ordered a congressional investigation in to Obama is just not based on any merit or publicly known information.
Would you be so on board with this type of baseless investigation if someone said it about Trump?
