This is probably the most important part of the quote. If we could eliminate welfare fraud, we could probably eliminate hundreds of millions of wasteful spending.

I can tell you from having family retiring from the welfare office here in Louisiana that they don't check and the excuse is they don't have the resources allocated to do so.

That's part of the point- the effort of accurately detecting and proving fraud (let alone recouping resources from it) can be costly. This is never acknowledged when politicians handwave about rooting out fraud, waste, or abuse. And, the benefits of doing this, aside from being speculative, need to be carefully considered in dollar terms. Not anecdotes.

I'm not saying there's not some change here and there to be saved. I'm saying whatever is attainable savings-wise isn't going to be a big deal and is not ever worth mentioning as some sort of fix to our budget problems.

Back in the 90s when welfare reform was passed, Michigan saw a 25% drop credited mostly to ineligible people being taken off.

Would like to get a link on this

doubt it

Yeah, healthcare is easy compared to welfare. the welfare system has so many handouts to so many special interest.

Just forget about it.

I am not even sure what they would do.

I missed your post. Interesting indeed since I had an aunt retire from there after 30 years.

My wife worked predominantly in childcare (approving recipients for childcare coverage, and approving daycares to receive subsidies) and food stamps in Western Jeff Parish office.

I think my favorite story was about a coworker of hers that was apparently leaving work and picking up shifts at a nearby popeye's. She was discovered, and fired, when a manager went to lunch there by chance. Apparently she did it for months.

I haven't seen actual reform on anything yet. Healthcare, taxes, and now welfare? When will some of these so-called reform ideas will actually get passed by Congress? Struck out on healthcare reform, looks like he will strike out on tax reform too. Until something is put into law, all this "reform" talk are just ideas at this point.

Brilliant - and I love how he uses his 5th grade vocabulary to further trigger the leftists.
