We should have alloidal property rights vs fee simple. Alloidal rights have their roots in English common law. You own your land not the government. Fee simple is what we have and you simply are using the land with the permission of the government. They can take it for taxes, they can condemn it, seize it for a highway etc.

Eliminate property tax
I think Florida is moving to eliminate property tax
This was a specific school tax that the owners thought they were exempt from.
This whole thing is a bit strange. The house is the parents that was left to the kids. They thought they were exempt. Some rogue Karen said, frick you.

This. You should pay sales tax when you buy the property and never pay taxes on it again. I get that it funds local govt and infrastructure but that can be done with a local sales tax and other fees or taxes. Property tax should be illegal
I am with all of you guys on property taxes, but this was a specific school tax.
So, we would need to come up with a way to fund that.

I purchased a home in 1989 that had previously sold for $158k and had gone back to the bank. I got it for $89k. As far as I was concerned, what I paid for it was FMV in a depressed economy. In 1997 it sold for $178k and that was FMV.
The idiot had the opportunity to pay the tax before seizure, after seizure, at tax sale, and for a year later could have reclaimed it by paying the taxes and fees back, plus interest, and the sales price, to the person or company that purchased it at tax sale. He failed at every opportunity.
