We can't assume the outcome would be the same with popular vote. Both candidates, not to mention millions of voters, would have changed their approach to the election.
People in solid red or blue states would have been more likely to vote and less likely to vote third party. The candidates would have campaigned in 50 states instead of 15.

Everyone knew the rules of engagement going in. The candidates campaigned accordingly.
Maybe I'd take these protests seriously if they'd happened when Obama won. News flash: he didn't win because he won the popular vote. He won because he gained more electoral votes.
The two tallies usually correlate, but not 100% of the time.
