A lot of it really is regional though. Most of the best jobs in my area (very heavy midstream presence) couldn't care less about a piece of paper saying you're educated unless you're a geologist, chemist, or an environmental or cathodic specialist. The good non-degree jobs are jobs you don't just walk into. You put in work and establish a reputation working for lesser outfits for decent pay, and after some years you start applying for the bigger outfits with incredible pay. That's the way it is.
There really are two very different "Americas" when you juxtapose rural life and industry against city life and industry. The forefathers were wise in seeing this, and setting the framework of the constitution so that the colloquial-minded urban inhabitants couldn't ever wrest complete control away from the little guy.
