After WW2 the US was the only functioning first world economy. We allowed unfair trade practices to be used against us to encourage pitifully weak economies to rebound. Once they had rebounded, the unfair policies should have been removed but weren’t. This could be just due to inertia, but is more likely due to corruption.
China was a big beneficiary of America looking the other way, as China cheated, stole, protected industries, and subsidized other industries as a predatory technique to gain monopoly. We allowed this because we theorized that once China’s economy boosted them out of poverty they would join the liberal new world order, but that didn’t happen.
Instead of becoming dutiful democrats the Chinese remained brutally authoritarian and signaled their aim was world dominance through their Belt and Road program.
Trump’s recent actions are the result of America awakening to the threat to our liberty that China has become. It took Donald Trump to violently shake us awake and to show us the threat.
Hopefully now you understand our point of view, even if you don’t agree with it.

They have been flooding us with fentanyl. In 2019 US and Chyna made a deal and Chyna agreed to execute any Chynaman found making the precursors. That deal was not honored. They instead leaked Covid and now the most subsidized products in Chyna are the precursors to fentanyl.
Some estimates put the death toll as high as 100,000 young Americans killed every year.

The final deal won't be 145%, of course. That was to get their attention, which it sounds like it very much has.

IF the echelon in Chyna actually believe they are targeted in a trade war AND they also believe they aren't treated with reasonable diplomacy and respect, they do have the power to make the American middle class "suffer" out of spite. This is a LOSE-LOSE for us.
