Rocky has a point. See Cheryl Sandberg's book: "Lean In".

Women are not as assertive as men when it comes to negotiating a first salary, and never catch up.

I've been responsible for adding nearly 400+ people to a payroll for the past several years, both FTE and contractors. Of that 400, about 1/5th (80) were women. NONE were paid less. In fact, several were paid more than their male counterparts, and they take off far more time.

I'm also married to a very successful working mom who laughs at this notion. She's made more than her male colleagues for years, while having children.

Good example--that's why I'm skeptical of the idea that child care responsibilities are a reason for the pay gap. If that were the case single men would earn more than married men, because most married men take on at least some child care responsibilities.

The real (apples to apples) pay gap is 9 cents on the dollar according to Slate's XX blog. That indicates it has more to do with the gender composition of higher paying and lower paying jobs.

Hey yourself.

Just illustrating my own experiences, and those of the people I know.

When I was gainfully employed, my salary was no where near what my husband made.

So, when it came time to decide who would be "on call", it was a no brainer. I quit working when my children were born. If I had returned to the job market, my earning potential was diminished, because of the time spent away from the "skill".

But I didn't.
And I've been mooching off of him ever since.

Well, I'm talking about more than 6 week maternity leave. Also, since I'm older than dirt, times have changed, and men are now sharing more equally with the responsibility of child care.

As my husband works at a job where he really can't take a day off to run a kid to the doctor or that sort of thing, it was better for me to leave the work force.

Probably better for my employer too.
