Why does everyone keep acting like California is the only state where this would happen?

There are more red seats in blue states than the other way around.

You are wrong. California is the only blue state that wasn't already redistricted to the extreme.

No, it's completely true. Outside of California, the Dems could pick up maybe 5 other seats through redistricting. That's being generous.

And yet, there is Maryland, Illinois, Washington, and New York, at the very least, that could easily just draw even more ridiculous lines to eliminate more red seats.

Maryland is fixing to get rid of its one GOP seat on the eastern shore by attaching it to a bigger piece of the Baltimore suburbs.

It isn’t hard to do. Granted i don’t know what the state legislature makeups are at the moment, but places like Minnesota and Colorado could easily do the same if their governments/populations wanted to.

Practically every state that isn’t within a 5-10% partisan margin statewide one way or another can eliminate the minority party from representation if that was the goal and there are no rules on political gerrymandering.

If you don’t believe me, go play around with one of the redistricting sites available on the internet. It’s actually incredibly easy to do, in most states.

No, they could not.

Where do you get this? Because Maryland is literally doing it

Illinois easily could just draw a pinwheel map out of Chicago and accomplish the same thing. Washington can group its entire GOP population in a single district if it wanted all safe blue districts, or eliminate the GOP entirely if it wanted to roll the dice on some 53-47 type districts.

You don’t seem to understand how easy this is if there are no prohibitions on political gerrymandering. In every state—if you go to the precinct level you can massively tilt every one of them, even those that are already gerrymandered to hell. At least outside of places like Vermont and Massachusetts, where it’s actually impossible to create a contiguous GOP district.

They can’t get rid of all 9 without making some vulnerable blue districts. But 5-7 is easy. I don’t understand why anyone wants this tit for tat. It’s not going to result in any sort of resounding win for Republicans. The GOP in the south could do this and net like 6 seats across LA, MS, AL, TN, and SC Texas gave what, 5? Florida could squeeze a couple more possible. California can swing 7 to D. Washington could eliminate all R districts if they wanted. So could IL. So could MD. It’s such a stupid spiral. It’s time for districting reform to end this stupid shite. Population, geography, existing administrative and municipal boundaries—period. Zero other factors.

When are y’all going to learn that all the whining and bitching on here isn’t going to change a damn thing?

Blue is going to blue and red is going to red. It’s all political theater…

What?

The point is that this is bad for everyone. This spiral of gerrymandering for political purposes is the single biggest reason why Congress is the most ineffective body of government in the developed world. The fricking Belgian and Dutch parliaments get more done than ours do, and they have a bajillion parties with coalitions and elections every 18 months because their governments can’t stay together.

It’s only gerrymandering when republicans do it.

Yes, Maryland can shift one district. That is one of the very few across the country.

Illinois easily could just draw a pinwheel map out of Chicago and accomplish the same thing.

If you look at how they would need to dilute their votes to do this, you would see how stupid this decision would be.

Yes, this is another possible pick up of one seat.

They won't gerrymander themselves into swing districts, but even if they did that would be a pick up of 2 seats, at best.

No fricking shite. Now, do something about it…

You, I, no one can do a damn thing about it.

Like I said, political theater.

I find it hilarious that you minimize the significance of a seat in those states, but claim that the GOP could easily outdo them by reclaiming a single seat in like 6 states in the south

It must be pretty heard for you to respond twice to the same post. Go to bed, you need to wake up at 3:30 for your shift.
