The news report says the company is losing 700,000/day
That's in British pounds, which is over a million per day in U.S, dollars.
The Chinese owners are probably being dishonest and trying to milk the U.K. government for a half billion pounds, but still, the blast furnace process is very inefficient and it's time to upgrade the place.
I understand about tradition, but you still have to be able to compete in the market.

They don't have to play by the same rules as everyone else.
It's easy to take over the playground when you can hit the girls and people wearing glasses.

I understand, but we have no answer for it.

What fleet?
They have more admirals than boats.
Perhaps, they will by steel from elsewhere...
GROK says:
quote:
Here’s a breakdown of the Royal Navy’s fleet size by major categories:
Aircraft Carriers: 2 (HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, both Queen Elizabeth-class carriers).
Submarines: 9, comprising 4 Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) and 5 Astute-class fleet submarines (SSNs), with the last Trafalgar-class submarine nearing decommissioning.
Destroyers: 6 (all Type 45 Daring-class).
Frigates: 11 (all Type 23 Duke-class, though some sources note 12 as of 2023, with one possibly in reserve or transitioning by 2025).
Mine Countermeasures Vessels: 9 (6 Hunt-class and 3 Sandown-class).
Offshore Patrol Vessels: 8 (River-class Batch 1 and Batch 2).
Inshore Patrol Vessels: 16 (Archer-class, though often excluded from major fleet counts due to their small size).
Amphibious Assault Ships: 2 (Albion-class: HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark).
Survey Vessels: 2 (HMS Scott and HMS Protector, with HMS Magpie sometimes counted separately but typically excluded due to its small size).
Other Vessels: Includes various smaller craft and experimental units like XV Patrick Blackett, though these are not always counted in the core fleet total.

Sure we can.
Let's just stop tying our hands behind our own damn back.

I worked building that boat.
I worked on the U.S.S. New Orleans too, which is the sister ship of the U.S.S. New York. Similar in design with some changes. That was at the Avondale yard at Bridge City.
My thing is alignments on rotating equipment.

People need more excitement. That's why there are more people that own goats these days.

They can create anything the blast furnaces create.
This obviously isn't true or there would be no blast furnaces left on the planet because they would have all been converted to electric arc.

You don't think that's being done?
If you live in a country without mining and production standards, no safety rules, no chance of being liable for injury or death to your workers. Never have to pay out money to families of men hurt on the job. Never have to worry about your mill meeting air quality standards, you can continue with what you have always done and produce the way your grandaddy did it.
Congratulations to you if you live in that place Mr. Wong.
