I had the same experience after Katrina with an old Nokia brick.
The old phones used what I heard called an analog signal (no idea how that worked), and the newer phones used a digital signal, 2G. We have 4G and 5G now.
Katrina wiped out the newer stuff and left the older stuff active.
The exception was texting, which was available for everyone. Post-Katrina was the first time I texted, to check on friends.

There wasn't by today's standards but there were phones way fancier than the Nokia brick that didn't get signal worth a damn.
Newer models require a hell.of alot more tower coverage. Back in the 90s I had a Motorola brick with pull out antenna that seemed to always have signal despite there being 1000s times less towers.
Of course I'm sure that brick probably irradiated my brain lol

Maybe so but that Nokia connected to the internet whenever you needed to. I used to keep up with the LSU baseball scores while at my son's basketball games.
