Because the actual issue isn't that a kid or a short person did the shooting, but that 2 officers were almost murdered for no reason what so ever.
Only a psycho would have a hang up about whether or not it was a kid. Because to a large number of people, the shooter in fact DID look like a kid.

They get the sentence but really don't get executed anymore.
It's just a totally iron-proof life-sentence unlike other life sentences.
The last person executed was in 2006. And apparently there are no plans to change that.
