Hershel was a freshman in HS when Georgia lost to Pittsburgh, if that was your point. Apologies if not.

we were #4 @ 10-1 up against 11-0 Pitt in the Sugar Bowl
USC was also 11-1 & ranked 3rd' Trojans won the Rose Bowl & finished 2nd at 11-1
Dan Marino threw a last second TD pass to win the game & 12-0 Pitt won the natty as the only undefeated team
not a clear natty, but we'd have at least split...

Georgia played Dan Marino led Pitt in the Sugar Bowl at the end of the 81 season. The game was played on Jan 1st,1982. They went into the game ranked #2 and lost 24-20 . Hershel was a sophomore that year.
Clemson was ranked #1 and defeated #4 Nebraska on the same day to earn the National Title.
