The charging infrastructure doesn't exist on a mass scale

They're not range efficient outside of city driving

The most efficient form of EV is sedans which isn't what Americans want. The technology doesn't currently scale up to SUV usability.

People don't want to load up 3 kids and all their shite for a beach vacation and have to stop and keep kids entertained for 45 minutes every 150 miles because the EV Suburban is sucking the juice.

I have family that fit this mold and recently had to get a loaner benz and they gave them an EV version. Credit to the dealer rep as apparently she was dreading it as none were fully charged and she knew they'd hate it, but only had EV loaners left at the time. Especially since she knew they are soon in the market to switch out their big LX SUV.

The wife story of all the drama to try to get the thing juiced up was sitcom level shite. Worse part is that she got like 2 or 3 of her private school mom friends involved in the shenanigans and so they got turned off on EVs too. They found a neighbor that has a charger in their garage, and they hooked up for 3 hrs and got 20-30mins out of it.

Question for EV owners: how do EVs perform in Louisiana heat when the a/c is a necessity all-day and all-night? Does it drain the battery faster?

Not well. I know some La dealers and hear horror stories,

One dealer who s active in the dealer community told me one of the problems, besides the obvious charging, range and fire issues is the resale value compounded by insurance issues.

The battery life sometimes is barely longer than the lenght of the finance times so reale is taking a big hit because who wants to buy a $25K battery pack. So the more that happens the lower the resale value.

EVs have their battery in a large structural tray type housing that is part of the chassis generally under the passenger deportment. More than once a sharp road object has punctures this tray but did not damage the batteries or caused a fire, but since it made a hole in this structure the whole infrastructure of the vehicle had to be replaced the insurance companies totaled the vehicles.

This also caused the resale value to drop like a stone to the extent banks are waking up to this and are reluctant to finance these used EVs.

A slow moving expensive train wreck.

Among the surprising hand-wringing is GM's Mary Barra, historically one of the automotive industry's most bullish CEOs on the future of electric vehicles.

I've said for years she's terrible for GM.

The Chevy Volt plug in hybrid was the killer app 12 years ago and they completely blew it. 55 miles on the battery, hybrid mode when the battery is depleted. I’ve had one for 7 years, and at times I go months without the engine kicking in.

GM should have expanded that drivetrain architecture into every segment and they would have crushed Toyota’s hybrids and Tesla.

They didn't sell well enough for whatever reason.

Probably because they didn't go zero to 60 in 3 seconds.

Which no one needs.

Yeah it’s meant to work to take your independence away that’s all

Everyone could drive a horse and buggy tomorrow and the government would immediately have an issue with horses

It should be noted that Tesla, while dominating the market, has a margin of 7.9%.

They have lowered prices several times to maintain market share which has destroyed their margins. (And resale for those lucky buyers that paid 25% more for their now two year old car) And they still lost some share due to all the competition there is now.

Going forward, assuming the other manufacturers continue investing in EVs, even at a reduced rate, the market will become more fragmented and even Tesla will no longer be profitable.

The Mexican Tesla factory is "on hold" due to the market not needing any more EV production. I'll be surprised if it's built in the next ten years as Tesla already has excess production capacity.

Actually extreme climates definitely effect the range

Extremely COLD climates affect range, yes. Hot.....can, but not nearly the same. And again, your A/C isn't going to kill your range; in fact, its effect will be largely unnoticeable. EVs kill ICEs on the impact of running the A/C on range/DTE.

They should have been pushing Hybrids not EVs, Hybrids get you about 100 miles on the battery which is more than enough for daily usage and can go to ICE on longer trips.
