A math teacher who had worked on campus for four years allegedly told a student who was speaking Spanish, “to go back to Mexico.” While her name has not been released publicly, she remains on paid administrative leave while the district investigates what happened.

In mid-November students at Fulmore organized a protest on campus during the school day because they were upset not enough had been done to address this situation. District leaders said this middle school is considered a social justice campus — meaning they teach these students about protesting as part of the curriculum and were happy to see the students taking action.

Fulmore Middle School is also in the process of being renamed, along with four other schools in Austin whose namesakes had ties to the Confederacy. Zachary Taylor Fulmore was a Confederate army private and Travis County judge.
