Are we still telling Japan they can't have a full fledged military these days?

A stipulation of their surrender and the peace treaty after World War II was a full-fledged Japanese military would be unconstitutional under the new order. They were relegated to a skeleton "Defense Force" working in conjunction with United States Forces Japan on Okinawa for defense of their country.
Fast-forward to 2021. With our new-found belief in not over-extending the American military and in the right of self-determination of other countries, should Japan be allowed to re-arm themselves to full military might, especially in accordance with their relative economic and political strength?
Note: this is a separate question from whether United States Forces Japan should be dismantled. Perhaps it could be reduced if Japan took on more of the load of their own self-defense, but it may not be necessary to completely dismantle our presence in Japan.

They're are fairly powerful as it is. No real restrictions on them anymore.

Fair enough. But, I imagine that their Navy is still quite small compared to the heights it teached in World War II.

Democrats and Chinese RINOs want a weak Japan for kickbacks.

Japan has been beefing up their military and capabilities for the past few years now.

Like most of our Allies, they don't trust us anymore. The Japanese have taken control of their situation.

Yes. But my point is a Japan with a "beefed up" military is akin to your typical NATO military. They may have some nice hardware, but they will still rely on the United States to be the muscle that backs them up.
My question is: Do we allow Japan to strive and pursue potential "superpower" status like they achieved in the 30s and 40s?

We're going to need a strong Japan and South Korea for what's coming. Everyone's asking when China takes Taiwan. I'll be happy if they don't take Hawaii at this rate.

Your answer - yes.
However, they will need to develop nuclear weapons. China has already stated they would nuke them into surrender if they helped Taiwan.

We have more soldiers in friendly Japan than we did in hostile Afghanistan.
Let that sink in.

They have a large portion of their population that are absolutely opposed to having a military that's capable of doing much more than defending their islands. No force projection. No nukes.
They could have nuclear weapons super fast if needed though since they've got all the materials and know how to do it. Force projection would take a LOT longer to ramp up and politically, it's a non starter with them.

You're confusing SOKO with Japan. The US Army barely has a footprint in Japan. The USN/USMC/USAF are far more active in Japan, though not as large as in the past.

As deep as the hate and distrust is between the Japanese and Chinese, I find it difficult to believe that the Japanese don't have a plan in place for rapid development and deployment of nuclear weapons, including already possessing the means of production.

The portion of the population that is against this has gone down dramatically over the last 15 years. They would vote to allow them if given the choice.
