What happened to moving manufacturing back, eliminating the trade deficit, and eliminating income taxes?
That all sounds real nice but I don’t know how we eliminate a trade deficit when we consume so much that we do not produce. And to get us to move manufacturing back, takes a long time and requires submission to our regulations ie much higher wages, environmental codes, safety codes etc… resulting in much higher operating costs resulting in much higher cost to the consumer.
Is that what we really want?
and there’s no way that tariffs can replace what we take in from income taxation. We’d have to take in over 250 billion a month in tariffs.
Not
Going
To
Happen.
The only way to replace the income tax is to do a consumption tax in addition to tariffs.

We’re all gonna be taxed by this. Before you anoint yourself the tariff avoider, baw, have a brief 2 minute convo with an LLM about (1) what happens to the prices of domestic goods whose imported rivals are highly tariffed, (2) about the relative portions of a typical basket of consumer goods have no foreign components (ie), and (3) what the real income effects to the average consumer trying to avoid tariffs though selective spending are likely to be. Post it here.

17.4 billion *12 months = 208 billion dollars
I love these posts celebrating how much tarrifs have gone up because they illustrate how unrealistic replacing income tax or fixing the deficit with tarrifs is.
To fix the deficit we would need 141.6 billion a month in tarrifs.
To replace income tax of 2.18 trillion we would need 181 billion a month.
