There was plenty of articles in the northern abolishonist papers and some of the larger ones. Chase was in Lincolns own cabinet and a staunch abolishonist. Douglas always wanted more and sooner from the US government and was seldom satisfied.

I didn't read all the specifics but Lincoln didn't want all of it in the papers because he probably believed people would get angry about it and would stop supporting war.

So it doesn’t really matter if the name is changed?

I thought I was pretty clear in what I wrote so I can only imagine you are being intentionally obtuse in an effort to incorrectly shape my ideas.

When people say Ft. Bragg, 0% of the people that hear that associate it with a vaguely known largely strategically unimportant general that lived in the 1800’s.

Not sure if you ever served but the Army is ABSOLUTELY BUILT ON TRADITION. It’s part of every single thing from the uniforms and the decorations on them to they way soldiers walk and address one another.

I served at Ft. Bragg because I wanted to be around the best soldiers in the army. Ft. Bragg is that place. Ft. Bragg is where the airborne lives. Ft. Bragg is the history and experiences of every soldier that came before me and everyone that will come after. Swapping the name to Ft. Liberty is removing all those years of tradition for the next generation of warriors.

I’ll be completely honest and I’m not proud of it but I had no idea that Braxton Bragg was a confederate general until after I left Ft. Bragg. It just never came up, it wasn’t important to anyone.

They are taking our traditions and beliefs and destroying them. I have had a direct relative in every major conflict going all the way back to the revolutionary war. I understand what those traditions mean and how this impacts the esprit de corps of the rank and file troops.

If you never served I can see how it’s easy to make the determination that it’s no big deal. It’s like changing the name of your city. Does it really matter? It’s just a bunch of signs right?
