Air Products canceled its $4.5 billion Louisiana Clean Energy Complex, putting an end to a controversial hydrogen and carbon capture project that proponents saw as a jobs engine and opponents feared would pollute Lake Maurepas.

The project, one of many proposed in recent years to take advantage of clean-energy tax credits, aimed to pipe carbon dioxide emissions, a byproduct of its activities, through Louisiana wetlands and to the lake where it would be stored about a mile underground.

The Pennsylvania-based company announced its decision on the project on Tuesday. In a prepared statement, Air Products said the project wasn’t going to pay off the way it needed to. The cancellation is part of a series of canceled projects that will cost the company up to $2.9 billion, before tax savings.
