If you drive on M-32 regularly, you may need to find an alternate route Thursday, August 5.

Part of M-32 will be closed for five hours on Thursday, August 5, due to an Air Force war-readiness training exercise hosted by the Michigan National Guard. The training is to help the Air Force land an aircraft on roadways designed for cars and trucks, WPBN/WGTU reported.

The Air Force plans to land four A-10 and two C-146 aircraft on the highway near the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

Multiple military units are participating, including the Michigan Air National Guard's 127th Wing from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, the Air Force's 355th Wing from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, and the Air Force Special Operations Command from Duke Field in Florida.

M-32 will be closed from east of Herron Road to west of King Settlement Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 5.

Neighborhoods in the surrounding areas may be affected by the power outage during this time. Air Force personnel will contact residents that it will affect and ask that they contact their utility company for backup plans if necessary.

The Air Force is also asking that civilians do not gather on the highway near the landing zones.

I mean, wasn't this part of the purpose of it being built in the '50s?

There is only one reason for them to be practicing landing A10's on paved highways.

And it isn't because of the extensive highway systems in the ME...

eta-And the C-146 is used by special ops...

Training for when Whitmer or the Democrat President orders A-10s to strafe interstates and rural highways.

Milley probably ordered this.

Nazis used the autobahn as airstrips during WW2, so following in their footsteps in more ways than one.

So, probably a good idea to keep practicing with the rise of China.

Other than critical equipment failures that dont require ejecting if you have a place to land?

China doesn’t have enough icbms or nuclear capable bombers or slbms to obliterate the US AF infrastructure like the Soviet Union.

So they shouldn't practice because they don't have that capability right now today?

What if they will in 10 years?

Isn't the point to be ready for anything?

Seems like a major cyber attack on infrastructure may require landing away from an airport. Not to mention regular mechanical failure.

And where's the logic to think this is sinister while still supporting a military of any size? I'd want the whole thing gone tomorrow if I had such a belief.

Correct this was done during the Cold War in the event a runway was destroyed. I guess there is some fear that China may do it.

We have Rapid Runway Repair (RRR) kits to repair runways, along with heavy equipment.
