The question remains should we shed light on these groups or not. I personally think we should. The White Nationalists have adopted a more undercover approach to recruiting and organizing and I am not sure that most people realize this is going on. It is easy to think these groups have simply died out. I think we should keep the lights on. Just today I saw a post here with the (((echo))) surrounding a word in the triple parenthesis. This originated from White Nationalists blogs and is beginning to leak into the mainstream. Whether it is being used unwittingly or not it is a dog whistle.
How do you know this information?
See, I would agree with you on the ‘remaining vigilant ‘, but who can be trusted to report accurately? That’s the problem with politicized news coverage.

My only regret is that I only have one up vote to give.

Because they are scared shitless that white people are waking up to the slow-grinding erasure of their culture and history.
Segment was a total joke involving a nobody going through a really bad teenage rebellion phase, any rational observer would immediately recognize the Neo-Nazis are the fringe's fringe and not respected by anyone who takes themselves seriously. Even other people in the "alt-right" hate these guys because they're total clowns.
But they run this segment and then make sure to have the sock puppet talk about how Neo-Nazis are worried about the preservation of white culture and history, which is a concern a reasonable person could have without ever wanting anything to do with Neo-Nazis, so that good old Johnny who still watches the news and trusts what they're telling him starts to associate a respect for his history with fringe terrorist goons, and is that little bit less likely to resist the erosion of his history in small increments over time.
They want you to know these fringe lunatics exist and want you to be deathly afraid of them, so that you wouldn't dare do anything that could be associated with them, like want to preserve your heritage against constant subversion and subliminal attack.
Absolutely

This thread was about Neo-Nazis and white supremacists. What's wrong with white nationalism?
Or am I misunderstanding you and you're using them interchangeably?

That is a salient question.
On the face of it, White Nationalism is a somewhat innocuous label but I differentiate between white nationalism and people who are part of the White Nationalist movement and consider themselves White Nationalists. A lot of average white people have feelings of white nationalism and there is nothing wrong with that.
The White Nationalists are a loose confederation of maybe 50 different White Supremacist/White Separatists groups across the country who not unlike different denominations of Christianity (only using this as an analogy!) believe different things and practice in different ways but they all have one general belief in common. In the case of White Nationalists, it is the supremacy of the white race a hatred of all other races/ethnic groups an in particular Jewish people and black people.
Most of these groups have tried to tone down their public profile and have tried to veil themselves in the White Nationalist label even though their message and goals have not changed. So I see the White Nationalist movement for what it is, a white washing (sorry) of the White Supremacy movement to allow them to become more mainstream and shed the terms and baggage Neo-Nazi, Skinhead and KKK carry with them. They are also doing a good job in impacting pop culture. As I said I have seen the (((echo))) more than once on TD as well as mudshark and plenty of Keke related words/memes. While I don't think people using those are likely White Supremacists but they are unwittingly (I hope) using dog whistles.
So I use their label because it is simply dangerous to let them hide behind a new name when the underlying ideas and objective has not changed. Just because they traded in sheets and suspenders/shaved heads for polos and khakis doesn't mean they are less dangerous it just means recruitment and mainstreaming are easier. A radical Islamist is just as (or more) dangerous in PFG shorts and a Salt Life T-shirt.
