My 11 yr old squirrel assassin nailed a couple grey ones this morning.

He wants to keep a couple pelts as trophies before we head back up to Alaska.

The tail. How necessary to get that bone out? Dang that thing sure is small...gonna be a pain in the arse to split open. Will it just dry out or is it gonna stink like ChadBoy's arse if I leave that bone in?

(I just clipped the tails off when I was a kid)

if you unshave the arse, it smells like shite.
if you shave the arse, it smells like sweaty vagina with a hint of poo.

That's what I'm kind of hoping.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to try. If it starts stinking, we can always clip the tail off.

I'm also hoping to hear from a trapper or taxidermy hobbyist here on the board.

Don't split it. Once you skin the squirrel out to the tail, take a pair of wire cutters and cut the tail bone far enough into the back to give you a bit of a grip. Then peel the skin toward the tail exposing enough of the bone to grab. Take a rag and two pieces of wire. We always used 2 2" 1/4-20 bolts but even a coathanger wire will work. Place the wire on either side of the tail bone and between your fingers. I took a couple pics for reference:

Place the wire like this

Imagine the caulk nozzle is the tail(sorry no squirrel tails at work)

Now grip the bolts tightly against the bone like so:

now grab the protruding piece with a rag, squeeze the wires and pull. This will pull the bone out 95% of the time and turning the hide inside out for tanning. By the way, this works well for deer tails too. Just use 3/8 bolts

It's going to stink no matter what. I'd leave the tail in and maybe put it in a ziploc with some lime (powder not the fruit) until you get home.

Skin the squirrel with and leave the bone in the tail. scrape off any fat and pin the hide to a board hair side down. Then cover it with 20 mule team laundry detergent. Let it sit a week. and it will be good to go. No smell. minimal mess.

that is how I prepare mine for fly tying material.

True. Dry day and I'm always tinkering with something so rough hands. I also bite my fingernails because I MAY be OCD or just ADD. Problems with sitting still.

Freakin' Genius!

Man, I really appreciate that you took the time to put that together.

I wish I'd have known that trick when I was a kid. Thanks again! Will get materials & try it out here in a few minutes.

Glad I could help!

We used the bolts for grip on the skin. The threads help grip but, with a squirrel tail, just about and stiff wire will work. If memory serves, we had better luck the fresher the hide.
