Trying to keep my yard luscious and green. Since we don't get much cold weather, is it worth it to spread some scotts winter fertilizer down? I want my yard greener than a leprechauns dick year round, baw.

no need for centipede, put down some pre-emergent instead

"Winterguard" is 32-0-10. That much nitrogen is not good for centipede. Especially right before winter. You could I guess overseed with rye but to get it to its best you'll need nitrogen, which again is bad for centipede. And you run the risk of hurting the centipede if the rye holds too much moisture in the soil

So I guess don't do anything or switch grass types completely

Well spray 2-4D or whatever broadleaf control during winter, and probably put down a pre emerge but don't fertilize

Over-fertilizing centipede causes die-back in the following growing season. Your centipede will be brown as a leprechaun's turds.

LSU's AgCenter has some good stuff for Louisiana lawns.

I would possibly look at putting some potash down during the winter. It won't help with keeping your lawn green during the winter, but potassium promotes root growth which helps a lot with weed resistance in the spring.

Mother nature will dictate your centipede going brown. Nothing you can do about that.

LINK

I've used this in the fall and even during the extreme heat of the summer and it gives the yard a nice boost without putting much nitrogen in the soil and keeps it green until the frost forces it into dormancy.

For the record 15-0-15 works best on centipede. For whatever reason that kind of grass does not like that middle number.

To the OP centipede will never get as green as St Aug, zoysia or bermuda. Even with a good quality time released fertilizer centipede has a lime green color to it. Mine stays pretty green when I keep it fertilized but my previous house had zoysia and it was dark green. Almost a bluish green.

You're definitely on the pretty late side, especially with these early cooler temps. I'd wait til spring, myself. And I've heard good things about Milorganite. I don't think it's much different than Holganix (what I use on my lawn)

Boot I'm not exactly sure how that stuff I recommended works. I read the link a few years ago because some guy at Home Depot told me it would help keep my grass green without a bunch of nitrogen thus helping it not grow tall where I was cutting it every 4 days. It worked pretty good for me. I like to fertilize my centipede in the spring and summer with Lesco but I've had good luck with the stuff I linked. I think it's safe to use now because it doesn't last 90 days like that time released Lesco. I'll have to read up on what your using because I've never heard of it. I think what you are using it utilized on a lot of golf courses.

Milorganite is pretty good stuff. Slow leach fert that also has 4% iron. It has trace metals though so keep it out of the vegetable garden

Thanks I did not know that. I've only been spreading it on the yard and in the flower beds thank goodness. I've got to admit it does work good on the yard. Smells weird when you apply it but once it rains that smell goes away. I like it because it turns my grass green but it doesn't make the grass grow rapidly where I'm constantly mowing. You can also apply a lot of it and not burn the yard up. Anything idiot proof is good by me. I've over applied that Lesco 15-0-15 and really had to get after it with water to keep from burning my yard up. I try to fertilize before a slow drenching rain but here in Mobile it seems to either rain cats and dogs or look like it's going to rain and only blow west of me.
