Winchester 94

I grew up with one of these, but it was lost in a fire when I was younger. I was looking to get one and noticed a huge discrepancy in what MSRP ($1200) and what the secondary market was for them ($350-450). What's the reason for this if anyone knows?

Lots and lots of 94's out there.
Winchester went belly up years ago and now only exists as a brand within FN. The 'real' 94 from New Haven hasn't been made in years.

Winchester hasn't been Winchester for a long time. The 94's you are seeing are probably from the 80' and 90's they aren't the best in the world but will get the job done. Winchester had been bought by its employees at this time if I remember correctly. I have one that I got for $200 that was barely used.

Pre '64 are the ones to own.
If the barrel reads 30 WCF, you have a very nice one. 30 WCF is what they called the 30-30 before it was called the 30-30
quote:
To save the Model 94 and restore a reasonable profit margin, Winchester redesigned the action for cheaper manufacture, substituting stamped sheet metal and roll pins for parts previously machined from forged steel. The steel buttplate became plastic and a less durable metal finish was substituted for the traditional bluing. The new guns still worked and shot just fine despite their aesthetic flaws, but the credibility of the Model 94 took a serious hit, and examples manufactured prior to the 1964 changes became instant classics

I've been wanting a '94, but I can't let myself get one being I have a Marlin already.
If I did get one it would be a used one before the rebounding hammer or extra safeties..
