August, 2009 I had a medium sized boar chased me up into the back of my truck. I had just stopped my truck on a logging road to walk into my stand and hadn't got more than 20 feet from the truck when the hog jumped out of the side of the road and came right at me. That's just my latest encounter with one wanting to fight.

Typically, a hog won't charge you if he knows what you are and isn't hurt or defending piglets. The problem is they can't see real well and if they can't hear or smell that you are human they can be unpredictable.

As a child, when squirrel hunting with my dad we've had our dogs rile up a bunch of hogs and bring them tearing back through the woods at us. We've had to climb trees or fallen logs to get away from them. Imagine yourself at about 7 or 8 sitting on top of a fallen log while 15 or 20 hogs surrounds you and your Dad and all you have is a .410 (not a Judge). However, I have also climbed into a trap pen full of hogs with nothing but a knife to mark them and castrate the boars and just had to worry about them biting me (which hurts, ALOT). If it's a sow with piglets though, you HAVE to get her out of there first or that bitch will try to kill you.

So, the summarize, the only thing I fear in the woods is a hog that doesn't know what I am.

I've heard when the piglets are endangered, the sows can get pretty aggressive.

But I've wondered myself about any real danger level.

I think its very unsafe to just be shooting at black streaks.
Sounds pretty racis to me too.

The danger is two fold, broken bones and cuts or gashes. Then next pig you see with cutters, go ahead and rub your finger over them. They wont be razor sharp as some claim but they will be plenty sharp to gash you open. Then take a look at the size of the jaw muscles. They have huge bite force. Then consider a 200 lb linebacker running at 4.3 40 time hitting you below the knee unprotected. Once you are down on the ground and they are intent on attacking you, you are screwed.

That being said, hog attacks are very rare and actual hog damage to a human is even more rare (thanks to trees, and guns)

That 300 lb boar I shot last month doubled back and died almost back to his blood trail. I'm convinced he did that thinking he was gonna get some payback. The spot he came back to was a blackberry thicket where I was on my knees crawling through it. He'd have jacked me the hell up if he'd lived a little longer.

I have been in close proximity to them multiple times, and been charged by them multiple times. More than once, I have killed a pig from the deer stand, and had one or more return or not go far after the shot. They have charged, and stopped either because I shined a flashlight at them, or shot at them.

I have also been on the ground turkey hunting, and had 18 of all sizes pass in single file line within 5 yards of me. Never knew I was there, and I didn't shoot at them for obvious reasons.

Point is, they are very unpredictable, and absolutely have the ability to inflict damage.

we had hogs on our property behind my house when i was young. we declared war and have now now been hog-free for about 10-12 years now.

we snuck up on about 20 in a little oak flat one day, started opening fire. after the first shot, they went every direction. we winged one, and he turned straight at us. my dad shot him at 10 steps with a .270, hit him in the shoulder JUST enough to make him veer a little to the side and die about 10 yards behind us.

we caught a big 300 lb boar in a trap. i was just a kid so they let me shoot him. right as i got up to the trap to shoot, he charged at the fence, and i shot right over his head about 2 inches at point blank range with a 20 gauge slug, right in the back. this fricker charged and hit the fence again, and was trying to get me up to the point of his last breath.

bottom line, if you aren't going to kill them dead, you better be careful to make a move FAST. if they think they're cornered, hurt, or otherwise at a disadvantage - watch out

Yes...He drove down a hill to his hog trap. Prior to getting there, a black hog ran near the trap. He drove the Jeep to the trap and found 5 piglets. He got out of the Jeep to get the piglets out.

Reading is your friend...left to right, top to bottom
Every hog trap I have seen has been in the woods, I assumed coming down the hill meant he was walking in the woods. But you know what they say about assuming.
