These folks usually have decent pricing on replacement engines. Sometimes the "scratch & dent" page can be interesting small engine

Ok here's the quick rundown on the unit I purchased:

- tiny fuel leak. Have to turn the fuel valve off to stop it. NBD for now but I'd like to fix this
- no reverse gear. It looks like gears are off by one as I have to put it in R to get it into neutral so I'll play around with this
- the bushing issue meaux helped me out with on the previous page. I want to fix that properly even though the way he rigged it works for now
- blade belt cover is missing the little clamps on either side to hold the cover on. I'll need to find some.
- brakes are extremely hard to lock. Combination of rust and being too tight but I'm afraid to adjust them too much as I don't want them to slip
- guy threw in 2 extra drive belts
- showed me grease points and recommended I pack grease in every couple mows
- started right away so that's a good sign
- it's heavy as shite. Will need to purchase a trailer for sure.

All in all this looks like a fun project! Can't wait to give it a test run

Is it just a line leaking? If it doesn't have an inline fuel filter also install one when you change out the fuel line.

Should be a Peerless 700 series transmission. There is a chain inside for reverse. Either it broke or it was removed at the last shift key replace. It's common for people to do away with the reverse as it's pretty much useless on belt drives.

see chain

I removed my brake pads.

awesome dude. What you give for it? Just the motor alone is worth over $300.

BTW, Glad you got recoil start. That motor has compression release and is very easy to crank.

BTW, Buy this every year.

awesome, i'll pick up that kit

At $20 its a steal to go ahead & get it now while i'm thinking about it.

here is the ad (he just deleted it), he wanted $350 but agreed to $300 cash. i met him at home depot because i had to rent a trailer

i'm still learning about the mower. its definitely a bit intimidating to me still as i'm trying to get used to starting/stopping/turning.

pull pins on front wheel casters and move washers to where you wish the height to be.

if you are wanting to change cut height as well ten move the spacers on the spindle bolts.

If for some reason you are not satisfied with the height of the rear axle then watch this

I'm no walk behind mower expert but that seems like a hell of a deal.

sorry to bump the thread but is it wrong that i feel like a kid trying to wait until christmas morning to open his presents?

i can't wait to get out in the morning and put the mower through it's paces. its a big-arse yard and i'm freaking excited. i feel like hank hill.

here's a pic from the fall where you can see part of the yard and of course its one of my FAV pics: my 18yo son rocking a MAGA hat and TPB pants with his CUCV in the background, orange cat and 2yo running around in nothing but a diaper

Holy crap I just got finished. That was like wrestling a 250lb octopus. I discovered lots of things I didn't know.

A. My fricking crab apple trees were out of control and required significant pruning to mow under them.

B. The left brake seems to not work properly but eventually I figured out it also acts as a clutch or something because it seems if I squeeze it 2x the first time it brakes and the second time it releases the freaking transmission and it starts rolling back on me. more on that below.

C. I almost died. Well not really but I was going up a sharp hill and hit both brakes and it released the tranny and rolled backwards and pinned me against a telephone pole. I killed the engine but I was stuck hard and embarrassed but finally managed to wiggle down enough to use my foot to push it forward enough to get out of that predicament. hoping nobody saw that.

D. Fuel leaks like a mother when I cut the engine. Just had to get used to twisting the fuel closed each time.

F. Belt driven my arse. I've never had that much of a workout. Major props to those who do this for a living.

Bonus pic. If you look closely you'll see there is a bitch of an incline just to the left of that tree.

It is going to be a nightmare without a sulky. Sounds like the braking system is messed up or something going on with the transmission. When both handled are squeezed in that releases tension on the drive belts and engages the brake shoes. There should be no pop or rough transition between the two. Everything is adjustable in that mower. Fine tuning can be tough but you can get it to how you like.

What about the transmission? Is that a difficult rebuild? It seems like I have a hard time kicking it into neutral.. Sometimes I had to slam it all the way to the left 2 or 3x before it stopped turning. And forget about reverse.

I also read not to change gears without both brakes on..a couple times I hit it with my knee while I was moving to kick it into a higher gear. Was that a no no? Did I do any permanent damage?

I honestly think the tranny issues are 90% of my problem.

ETA I have to do quite a bit of backing up with the obstacles in my yard particularly on inclines and angles. Any suggestions on making that easier?
