Why is Lake Ponchartrain so hard to fish?

First, let me sat that I am a lake p newb. I've heard all the talk about how finicky a place it is. I consider myself a pretty decent fisherman.
Went out there today. It was calm, the tide was moving, the water was beautiful. Hit the trestles. Nothing. Hit the causeway. Missed one speck and foul hooked a 30 lb blue cat. Back to trestles. 1 flounder. We fished live shrimp, matrix shads, gulps. Couldn't boat a trout.
With the conditions like they were, we should have caught fish. It kills me that I couldn't catch a single fricking trout. What is the deal with this place?
Eta: there were thousands of ducks on the middle of the lake.

No telling with the trout in Lake P. The smallest thing could turn them off. They're really finicky.
The most trout I've ever caught in Lake P was in brown water. Not what you'd expect.

We saw other boats bring in nice hauls of nice fish.

They don't attack the bait very aggressively. I miss many fish when I realize a few seconds later that it was a bite.

Bite is always very soft.
Just remember this phrase: it's free to set the hook.

Always used plastic the times I went.
I'm not a good or experienced fisherman. So I just use what my neighbor tells me to. Normally go a few times a year.

You must be on a boat with someone who can show you what the technique and the bite looks like. This is about all I can tell you. May be going Friday. You wanna go?
