I know of people in Louisiana that go a whole year and see 8 deer and shoot 6 of them and wonder why they don't see deer all the time, also know a few people in La that will shoot 10-15 deer a year, most of them at night.

Yeah I know a few like this too and I can't believe there are still these types out there. I could have ground checked a buck this morning but there are three good young bucks I want to let go for next year and I couldn't see his horns good enough to see what he was.

I was coming back from Arkansas yesterday and saw 3 does standing along the highway off of 65 just south of Tallulah. Haven't seen that in a while. Guess the cold weather had them on their feet.

I think it is just a factor of the hunting pressure. My office in the middle of town and we have had deer run through the parking lot at least three times the last two years and had one hit by a car in front of the office a couple of weeks ago. No one is hunting them in town.

In the woods, they get a ton of pressure and thus start hiding. I've got a buddy in Virginia who hunts, but their rifle season is only two weeks with the rest of the time being archery. His deer are almost tame because they dont' have the pressure on them.

along roads, in yards, in small suburban, urban wooded plots like you do in other places?

I find this to be untrue. I see them in a few locations that would fit that description around BR.

We get the entire first week of buck season off in WV and call it Thanksgiving break. A buddy, his gf and I went back to my fathers land in WV this year (about 300 acres split into 4 different tracks) and bagged 7 deer, 4 bucks and 3 does between 3 of us. And the previous comment on killer vs hunters, we slay the deer, they are just everywhere in WV. And turkeys are a f'ing pain in the arse... they are everywhere.... WV and PA #1 for volume of deer, not the biggest bucks, but shite ton to kill and eat...

There are so many factors that attribute to the answers to your question.

Differences in weather that cause an earlier and longer period of decreased forage for NE deer. Where as in LA it is not unusal to have the forest green for much if not all of the year. Also snow accumulation buries acorns instead of the season long buffet that covers the forest floor here. Down here they can be sutained in a small area an never need to come out.

Differences in crops available and the resultant seasonal spikes in forage affecting wildlife reproduction and mortality

Differences in urban sprawl and city development that allow for veins of wooded shelters to wind through the city and suburban areas where in the south we have tended to expand outward from single points and consume all of the land with concrete, ag use, or industirla use as we go out. The availablitiy of untouched land just outside of urban areas though allows the deer to just push out.

Over poulation in NE is well documented vs better managed deer populations in the south.

Differences in land ownership and thus huntable land availability. In La owning 2-10 acres on the outskirts of town is common and provides enough space to hunt (inside city limits) but hunting on a single lot in the NE would be impractacle, thud creating santuraries for the wildlife.

Hunting regulations like shotgun or bow only counties upnorth decrese deer aquisition.

and on and on and on....
