Why are they letting red snapper take over the gulf?

Went on a 12 hr charter and that's all we caught on EVERY spot we stopped. Not a single Vermillion, ruby lip, grouper, trigger, or anything else for that matter.

Awesome snapper haul with some monsters but it would have been nice to add something else to the haul.

So the guys with lines with a thousand hooks on them can catch a lot faster and make more money and give a little of that money to legislators to repeat the cycle.

I just got back from PCB, we caught a nice mixed bag. Limit of 15-28lb red snapper, 3 8-12lb red grouper, a 22lb gag, a couple nice lanes, 3 12-16lbs kings, a runner jack and several smaller white and vermillion snapper. Also caught a couple triggers but they aren't in season right now so had to throw them back. Not sure where you were or whop you fished with but our captain was pretty spot on with what we would catch at each spot. We caught the grouper about 27 miles out, captain said the grouper have moved out to deeper cooler water this time of year.

We went 42 miles at the furthest spot. Even our two hook rigs that normally catch the other "variety" of fish were bringing up red snapper.

We were on one of the better boats out of Zekes in Orange Beach. We did catch some really nice kings trolling back in, one 39#'s.

may have just been a red kinda day. did the captain say if they had been catching a good variety lately?
our captain also said that they snapper restrictions haven't really seemed to increase the quantity of fish but seeing a much better quality of snapper. looked back and we actually caught 5 red grouper.

Duh....because they are endangered. Don't you read what the feds say and the commercial guys tell them so they can protect their income?

You don't longline for snapper. 15 hooks is what I used to use*

*I don't pick a side when it comes to recs or commercial guys.

They are letting Red Snapper take over so they can "protect" all the other species next.
