Why are deer seasons so short in the Midwest?

They have massive deer but the seasons are only a few weekends a year. Is it an issue with not having very many deer due to lack of cover?

I would personally much rather own hunting land in the south with smaller deer but more time to hunt.

Good call. I think a couple of states are shotgun only?

I think it has more to do with the number of hunters. They have tons of deer and they are a pest.

I do know Nebraska had a record season the other year, they let more tags out and had more deer killed than ever. Ill try to find the numbers.

I remember asking my cousin when he owned a ranch out there what time we would have to start hunting if we wanted to come hunt. He said "About 10 am we can open the back door and shoot what we want."

Here is a link.... LINK

I simply could not imagine spending so much time, effort, and money planting food plots, bushhogging, scouting, etc to only go hunting two weekends a year. We have it made here in the deep south.

Having land in the Midwest for the most part a food plot is useless in most areas of IL. There are just too many locations for a deer to eat. Farmers have Alfalfa and wheat planted that time of year plus unlimited harvested corn and beans. There really isn't cost on food plots, bus hogging, etc like there is down here.

Yes there are costs, but it's different. As others have said, you can bow hunt out there for a good 3 months. with some gun hunting and some muzzleloader doe only hunting. The season is short but it's normally VERY good.

Bow and muzzleloader extend the season. I was told there is a short gun season, in Kansas for example, simply because the deer would just be massacred. Residents up there just push them out of draws and shoot them out of trucks and shite. There aren't many places to hide. Tree lines and draws with timber are the only traveling corridors...

If I saw that many more big deer than I do down here I'd gladly trade season length for exciting hunts.

That makes sense. It would almost not be fair to rifle hunt in such open spaces where it is easy to pattern deer movement.

What everyone else has said about Kansas, here are a few photos from this past year. Most if not all of these were taken from the road. The whitetails were a lot more skitish than the mulies...

I was up pheasant hunting in the NW and would drive around in the evening and take photos to pass the time...

do you guys have leases up there or just book hunts? my uncle has a lease in kansas and works 7 and 7 so he has more time than a regular working person to hunt up there.

The huge deer are a result of the short seasons. I would give anything for Arkansas to shorten our gun season and allow the bucks to get some age on them. There would still be plenty of opportunity for those that love to hunt with a long archery season while also taking a ton of pressure off of the deer herd.

Very nice photos. It still amazes me how deer in Kansas will walk out into the middle of a 200 acre field like that in the middle of the day. You would never see anything like that in the South. I guess they adapt and don't need cover as much out there.

I like the long seasons in Alabama where I hunt, but I do wish the state would put an 8 point minimum on any bucks killed in the state except for youth hunters.

I've got a funny story about this.

Many years ago, some family members of mine were going goose hunting in Iowa (I believe it was Iowa - may have been Illinois though).

Anyway, the camp at which they were staying had a bunch of folks deer hunting too. When everybody got up this morning, one of my cousins starts talking to the deer hunting group, all of whom were getting their shotguns ready to deer hunt.

My cousin asked "where are y'alls rifles". To the dismay of the deer hunters, they asked "they let y'all shoot centerfire rifles at deer in Louisina? Don't folks get killed?".....

My cousin says "oh yea, sure, 2 or 3 a year, but that kinds just part of the deal"......

Wish I was there now. Two of my buddies are turkey hunting as I type this, 2 down in as many days. Had to pass on the trip this time. I will be heading back up there for duck season again this year.
