First thing I would do is not even think about these cookie cutter mass produced rifles

For the majority of us, a rifle is simply a lead launcher. Nothing more and nothing less. There are many mass produced rifles that can land bullets where you want them to go for more than one mans lifetime.

Custom rifles are awesome. I'd love to have a NULA but in reality, $4k can buy lots of other things I need and I'm not willing to sacrifice those things for a rifle. Nor are many other hunters.

I don’t care what other people spend their money on but personally I wouldn’t spend bunch of money on a custom rifle.Browning stainless A bolts(2) and X bolts(1)topped with Leupold scopes do it for me.They are accurate, they fit me and work for where I hunt.
To each his own.

How many more deer have you killed by using a custom rifle over a factory rifle?
Customs can be great, but the OP is trying to find something for him and the boy. That sounds like he doesn’t have a bunch of money to spend.

That why 2019 is the best year in history for budget rifle shopping. 2020 will be even better.

I like this example best. My brother hunts with a mossberg atr. 270 that he bought about 10 years ago for $300 with a scope on it. The rifle will cut clovers at 100 yards with anything you put in it and hes killed a mountain of shite with it. Its light, the stock fits well, the trigger is decent. For a guy who just wants to kills stuff, that rifle is perfect. It shoots better than my $700 tikka which we all laud as the ultimate budget rifle.

Is it a NULA? Absolutely not. Im sure there are mossberg atr's out there that shoot horrible and wont feed and shite like that. A NULA wont do that. But once it leaves the barrel a .270 bullet out of a 24" MOA gun is a .270 bullet out of a 24" MOA gun.

I get the appeal of a custom rifle and if I didnt have a fishing hobby I'd have a $5k rifle. There was a time that if a man wanted a subMOA lightweight rifle he had to spend a few paychecks on it. That time is passed and now we can get lightweight accurate reliable rifles with a plenty good enough scope for less than an out of state license

As my old Daddy used to say, "Son, Savage don't make no trash".

Well went ahead and pulled the trigger on the savage 110 and got it for an unbeatable price. Will be putting a leupold vx-freedom 3x9x50 on it with a picatinny rail. Should give a ton of adjustability between the accufit stock and accutrigger for both of us.

May take him a couple years to be able to shoot it, but that still gives me an argument that I need to get another gun for him to shoot till he grows into this one lol. May have to build a 6.5 grendel in ar platform next!

UPDATE:

I bought the Savage 110 Storm off of GunBroker for a great price. Was going to put the Leupold VX-Freedom 3x9x50 on it, but went with the Leupold VX-R 3x9x50 w/firedot reticle instead. Sweet setup that should last both of us a long time. Spent some time at the range and got it dialed in. Just need to get a few other boxes of ammo and figure out which it likes the best.

Thanks for all of the help.
