What's the deal with hunting off I10 around St James/ Ascension?

On my way in from Nola, lots of trucks on the side of the highway. Also lots of hunter orange. Strangely I say 4 different guys with their rifles standing on the side of the road. Seemed like an awful lot of guns in a relatively small area.
So what's the deal with the land? Private?

I have noticed this as well. Last year when the water was up, deer were everywhere on the interstate. I commuted from BR to NOLA every day for a year and wondered this same thing.

Running dogs?
Surely not on the edge of I-10. But hunters lined up that way sure sounds like it.

Its part of a WMA(joyce maybe?). I will get a link later. no time right now.

That's the maurepas swamp WMA. Some of it is private (close to sorrento exit) but it's mostly swamp.

I can't imagine they'd have their rifles shouldered if they were just running dogs. And in one of the clearings there was a box stand literally 40 ft off the interstate. Can't imagine they do to well out of that

I'm beginning to think you stalk me on here

You'd be surprised. Deer get accustomed to the traffic.

I have seen them stacked up on the shoulder and meddian numerous times when the water was up in the swamp. From the looks of it, the hunters were wearing mostly hip boots or waders and were stalking the deer on the edges of the swamp. They would gather at their trucks at daylight and all make a drive and hit the woods with guns a blazing.

Pretty sure that land is all private. I drive that route often and I've never seen them handling dogs by the intertstate. You can see several box stands on the utility company right of way.

A large majority of it is Maurepas Swamp WMA. It is Area 6 so dog season doesn't open until next weekend. I hunt the other side of it. They were probably just congregating and discussing where they were gonna hunt.
Or someone may have shot one and they were trailing it. Possible the guys next to the road were just being prepared in case they jumped it and it tried to cross the interstate.
There are a lot of deer back there but the terrain is hell. Most of it has a foot of standing water and its boggy as hell underneath.
