Went on a quick trip with my friend t-neg yesterday.
We ended up on the east side of Alligator point cast netting finger mullet.

WE were in about 2' of water when I heard what sounded like someone ruffling a paper bag behind me.
I turn to see no less than 1000 bait fish going about 40 mph. jumping out of the water, all headed the same direction.
They had the water to a boil.

In all my years of inshore fishing I have never seen anything seen close to what we saw yesterday.

This happened about 4 times in a 10 minute period.

I know we say a bunch of sharks in the area so I'm sure they were the predators that were after this bait, but I'm just baffled as to what they were.

They seemed like a blue water species bit he forked tails, short legnth(about 10 inches long),the fat body(about 6 inches tall) and thin profile(about 1-2 inches thick).

What do you think they were?

Blue fish maybe. How salty was the water where you were?

How many 5" wide mullet have you seen with a forked tail?

These fish were really cruising,i WOULD HAVE TO SAY BETWEEN 30-40 MPH.

Yeah i got that, I'm just saying, I've seen big mullets in big schools cruising like that. Just a little guess

The description sounds like hardtail but it doesnt sound like you were in an area for hardtail

The body shape would suggest, hardtail, baby jack crevalle, bonita, etc.

Really shallow water for any of these species except the jack crevalle.

I guess you are referring to the predators chasing the bait fish?

I'd be willing to bet that it was a school of young pompano. We don't get a bunch of them here in LA but they will start to come onto beaches/outer bays later in the summer.

this is the exact little fish I caught in my cast net when I was getting finger mullet.
I thought it was a baby Jack Crevalle.

These in the picture are Pompano. I can't find any pictures of young jack crevalle, but i'd imagine that they look really similar.

I was in Gulf Shores this weekend and the surf was full of these small pompano.

I've always wondered that too. I've always just assumed that they prefer a more sandy, less silty bottom with clearer water. Not sure though.

Also, I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner, but is there any chance that you just saw a school of pogies? I've seen them anywhere from as big as a quarter up to 7 or 8 inches long.

pogies are super thin, and don't travel that fast.

baby jacks is my guess.
