If you can catch you some bream before you bait yah lines. The bream heads work awesome if your after turtles.

tie a trot line to two objects and keep it suspended about 2-3 inches above the water. bait with chicken hearts.

this with a piece of cut bait always got me a few turtles.

Live buffalo is the best, cut bait if you can't find it. Stake a trot to the bank with a weight on the end. Don't be afraid to throw it in the trash. Them big turtles love it.

We usually use milk jugs and chicken livers, throw them out at night and come back in the morning.
Going back and reading through the thread, some of you make it sound so easy. I must be doing sumpin wrong.

Great thread. Been following it for awhile.
This spring, I and three buddies saw the biggest alligator snapper any of us had ever seen before or even imagined. I've seen the ones in captivity where they say they were alive in the civil war and weight 100-200 lbs. The head we saw come up made that one look like a midget. Since then he's been seen again in the same general area. He's got a head that looked like the end of a telephone pole broke off and came to the surface. Couldn't see the body, but got to see the full head for about thirty seconds. ENORMOUS turtle. Would never tell where we saw it. But they're out there. He can't be the only one. I just can't imagine taking him though. Would be sad if someone did. He's made it this long. Would be cool to get a pic of him though. But it was like a rottweiler sized head poking up and you know if you screwed up grabbing him he's gonna make you pay in serious coin for the mistake. Not that we could get him in the boat anyway.

Got skunked again last night. Found a baby bream that had a v-shaped bite mark on his dead floating body. Definitely killed by a snapper. So I used him, hooking him through the eye socket and spine.
Came back to the line and he was gone.
The turtle is just playing with me now.
It's ok, I'm gonna get his arse. I'm persistent/hardheaded.
If it were so easy, theyd call it catching and not fishing.
To catch four turtles, I've set over a hundred lines.
ETA: the spot you posted has to be crawling with turtles. I'd fish the ever living shite out of that place.
Oh, BTW, spicy still owes me a car wash. I'm up for parlaying it on a turtle trip.
Here is a photo for her trouble. Interesting sunflower that I'm growing:

This thread reminds me, the last time I caught a snapping turtle in LA. Last summer was playing golf at LSU, the canal you cross over to get to the short Par 3, I believe it's 8, anyway I crossed over the canal in the cart with my buddy and there was a nice size snapping turtle in the canal. We parked the buggy, walked down and grabbed the fricker by the tail as my buddy had him clamped on the putter.
Drug him up the canal, threw him in the basket. Finished the turn and threw him in the truck.
You shoulda seen the looks with a 20 lb turtle trying to climb in the cab with us.

I have a place that I release small ones. Back when I was a kid we'd caught two that were 80lbs. I could sit in the shell.
Were you in a boat?

I just want to say that even though I haven't posted in this thread yet and even though I have no idea how to catch/clean/cook a snapping turtle, this thread has been great to read.

On the bream, I froze 15 of them whole for just that. I read both on this thread and another place that they were good bait for turtles. Problem being they can steal 'em easy.

skidry, I just noticed you're keeping them turtles in a freggin pool?
Kids are hilarious. Do they not make a mess though? I put mine in tubs so they can "clean out" and the water has to be changed every other day. Sometimes daily for the first couple. Some nasty bastard when it comes to bathroom etiquette.

Luckily, my spots are close to my place. I go home and play ping pong against the wall (Forrest Gump style) for two hours then go check my lines.
I found another potentially great spot yesterday that I plan to fish after work.
I've got turtle on the brain right now. My family and friends think I'm a crazy coonarse. Maybe when they eat my sauce piquant Saturday, their opinions will change.
Probably not but I won't care.

I don't keep any turtles anywhere. I get home the other day and I have a 12" and 18" spftshell in my pool. After feet were removed from asses, all turtles were returned to the pond.

Good luck tonight. I'm fatigued.

It stormed yesterday evening in Pville. Waterways were swollen and became fast moving quickly. I fished anyway.
No turtles.
I did catch a 3lb. blue catfish though.
Looks like I'll have turtle sauce piquant with a side of fried catfish for my dinner party Sat.
Damn, I'm working backwards.
At least I can turn lemons into lemonade.
Shite, I should just go frogging tonight and round the meal out.

Had decided I was not going to set last night but had a last minute change of heart. Got caught in some BAD shite on my 4 wheeler but it was worth it, kinda, since I had two this morning.
Too bad they're too small but still fun. I caught them within 100 yards of each other so I think I'm onto a good spot. Going to double up my sets tonight. These will be released. Smallest one is tee tiny and cute. 6 inches from front of shell to back.
The other is 9. I know a lot of people who would clean it but since I read some State had a 12 inch reg I figured that was a good place to cull so someone else may enjoy the fun or he/she will add some bitties to the population.
