Correction, 10 friends; 1 prospect.

I actually thought it was $15.00 or $16.00. My mom's bro said he wanted to buy some. I told her to tell him it's illegal to sell.

What exactly are the legistics with that, anyway. Only someone with a turtle farm? I also wonder how fast they grow- will have to reasearch that.

Best way for me to catch a lot of turtles at a time is with a hoop net with meat, liver, cut bait, etc hanging in the middle of the net. Gotta be shallow enough for the top to be showing and be able to bait the net.
tenfoe is the net master. I do have 4 hoop net type of turtle traps but still have a lot to learn. Have gotten red-arse and caught 2 in one net, twice but that's all since August of last year. Most of my luck has been with jug lines/set lines.

I still have no idea how to use them in a bayou that is very low, as they get around here in July. I've read you can even set them horizontally which I think I may try next since nothing else has given me any consistency.

Tonys has pretty good seafood prices. Im not too sure on the specifics of the sale of turtle meat, but I would assume Tonys has some sort of specialty license because turtle, alligator and frogs are listed in a 'specialty meats' section.

#30-#40 pounds in the freezer is insane!
Now I really feel like a noob/chump.

No joke. I was pumped to have enough to cook and still have 10 lbs in the freezer.

The fact is, most alligator snapping turtles grow to around 30 pounds in their first 5-7 years. After that the growth slows slightly. A 100 lb turtle very well may be 100 years old, but 30-50 years is more likely.

Oh and fin, I'd still like to try our hand at your place. I'm OCD though so please let me know a few days in advance so we can plan a meal, and I can pick up enough groceries for however many are coming.

It's not really that much if you catch a couple nice ones. I haven't been fishing them much this year. I caught a 32#, a 36#, and a 58# earlier this year. Aside from those I think I've kept 2 common snappers and a handfull of softshells. Y'all are doing good if you are catching all those turtles in ditches, keep it up. I just really don't target common snappers that often. It's not what gets me excited I guess.

Now what would get me excited would be those pictures from the Tarpon Rodeo you fellas are sending around. tenfoetenfoe@gmail. Come on with 'em.

Dammit, I don't know why I passed over this thread for so long. I have several areas of stagnant water on my lease. I may have to give this shite a shot.

Im officially sick.

Had a 25+ pounder on the line, got him to the bank and the hook slipped out of the leader clasp. Somehow the clasp had opened. He was so big his shell had teeth marks where I guess a gator gave up after a while.

I almost jumped in that bayou after him but I had to choke down a throat full of puke.

At least I know my new spot will produce. Hopefully he has short term memory.

Put another hook there. He'll be on it in the morning. They generally stay in the same area for a long time. They don't like moving too far.

Thanks ten.
My spot is hot. That sucka hit within an hour of setting the line. Rebaited, went back again and all lines were clean. Rebaited once again and will check in an hour or so.

Hope he's haning on the end of that line in the morning. I'll be in meetings and away from puter so shoot me a text.

btw, I'm a firm believer in swivels but I don't use a swivel with a "clasp". I use a barrel swivel and tie it to the line then cut another piece and tie it to the barrel swivel too, and the other end to the hook.

Also good if something swallows hook. You can cut off the leader and tie another. Everyone has their way and not saying mine is better but did want to throw out the idea for you padna.

Caught two red ears (executed via machete)
and one pretty big soft shell.

Soft shell is wider than the opening of a five gallon bucket so I'm guessing he is in 15-20 lb. range.

He is being held hostage and interrogated until the ghost snapper I lost yesterday is captured.
