New information on the downed helicopter in the Gulf of Mexico. The Coast Guard says it was a "civilian helicopter" with two people aboard. It happened 60 miles south of Terrebonne Bay Wednesday.
The report came in around 2:40 p.m.; witnesses reported a downed helicopter, Bell model 206-L4, near South Timbalier Block 317.
Crewmembers on the rig deployed a life raft and reported the aircraft sank below the water.
The Coast Guard launched two aircrafts to assist, as well as an 87-foot patrol boat to assist in the search. Two Good Samaritan vessels are also helping with the search.
No word on extent of injuries at this time.
Petty Officer Carlos Vega says early reports did not give the age or sex of the two people on the helicopter, or say who owns the helicopter or the rig.
