Can someone please recommend a good turtle trap? They are overtaking our ponds. I tried building my own, but it hasn't worked out very well. Thanks in advance.

My neighbor modified some crab cages. Made the funnels bigger and sets them so that they aren’t completely submerged.

LINK

Call them and tell them to put a flat throat on it rather than the finger throat.

ETA: also flatten the bottom out so it won't roll on you

For redear turtles?
I've always wondered how those floating traps would work for them. Like this one: Floating trap
I'd think you could build something similar for way less than $300. Is this what you built?
You could probably build several and not come close to spending $300, actually. It's more of an example than any reco to purchase.

They work. I know a guy who made one out of PVC and chicken wire with a 2x6 across the top. they just plop off into the cage. The only problem is getting it in and out of the water with 100 extra pounds of turtles in it. I catch the shite out of them in hoop traps when trying to catch snapping turtles. Floating traps really do work well though for basking turtles.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try to build a floating trap and see if that works. Should be a fairly inexpensive experiment.

go with pvc for the floating trap. built one with landscaping timbers and it sunk just enough the turtles could crawl out.

the guy I saw who caught well had 4" pvc around the top, with a chicken wire cage hanging below the waterline. He had a board that went across the top where the turtles would crawl up over the cage to bask then plop down into the cage when they got off. He said if he had to do it again he'd have rigged up some wheels on the bottom because it would fill up with so many turtles it was tough to get it ashore before he bashed them in the head with a shovel.

I mean, a rifle is more fun. Looks like the guy on Rambo II that gets hit with the exploding broadhead.
