Mccomb, MS....Had 5 freaking longbeards 150yds dead middle of field with 2 jakes this evening at 5pm gobbling their heads off everytime it thundered. Called to them, wouldnt budge. This went on for an hr. Cluck, purr, yelp.. nothing lol. Strutting and gobbling 5 deep. Then 2 hens came out on the COMPLETE OPPOSITE side of this huge arse field about 500yds away. And make one little chirp and these bastards all line up and head their way never to be seen again. All the while, im now stuck in the freaking flood that was approaching and lightning storm. I am a good mile deep in, so here i am with my heavy arse turkey vest, snake boots, shotgun, and carrying my chair... running back to the truck before im popped by lightning. I swear these things are the devil, and gone be the death of me

Not when you are soaking wet, and about to die of a heart attack from running... and heading home without a bird after you had a whole freaking basketball squad on in the field for an hr

you heard and saw da lesson, learn for it, call less, speak when spoken to, less is more, you forced da birds into da arms of the other females, you overcalled and sounded like a tranny, one chirp and visual contact wit dem real slump busters and dey made the right choice and headed dat way my friend...

Nah, probably not the case. I’ve gone nuts on birds over calling with nothing to lose and they have eventually come in. I don’t think it was the calling but just i outlasted then and no other hens came around and they lost their patience. Not saying it’s a recommended method, just can work.

Given that, most of the time when Toms are strutting in the open field they want a visual. Calling just doesn’t really work. That’s just nature. They are waiting for the hens to come to them.

If anything that’s where just using a fan in the field works to draw them in.

yep made that mistake before. Never call to a tom that is shock gobbling a thunder late in the season in a field. Walk out there with a couple fans at the edge of the field. make sure they can see those fans and walk up and down that edge to get there attention for about 5 minutes. then gobble when there is no thunder followed by one good set of purrs and yelps. then strut one more time and disappear into the wood where you want them to come. wait about one minute and gobble again. They will drop strut and run to you.

Lol thanks.. nice bird. I got one last week here. Not like im shut out. Just was crazy yesterday... and for those saying over called. I dont think so at all. I sit down and watched them for 15 mins to see what they were going to do before i called. And when i called, it was very light cluck, and purr, then sit call down. The main problem was they beat me to the field, and i could not decoy up. Had i had the chance to set a hen up, they would have came in on a rope. The moment they saw the 2 other hens... they stopper everything and went straight at them. As far as the fan, i agree.. i thought about that as i sit there yesterday, would have been perfect time for one. Unfortunately i do not have one. This is my first real season turkey hunting, and need to add a few tools to the bag.

I am not the best turkey hunter in the world but it is tough to pull any bird off live birds...especially when it is time for heing and sheing…..it could be that even though you weren't aware the real hens were about the Toms were well aware of it.....Turkeys are tough at best, that's what makes them worthy of the chase.
