Learn to fish a jig day 1. It is a bit more difficult than fishing a spinnerbait or soft plastics, but worth it when you're looking for big bass.

The only thing you need to catch bass is the biggest baddest heaviest driest fastest sparklyist most spacious best compartment design boat and the rest will come.

Tips for a new bass fisherman
If you see someone on the water and ask how they are doing and they tell you they aren't catching fish but hiding the bait from you, they are lying...

I would say the most important thing to learn about bass fishing is knowing why and when to fish with certain colors. I don't have time to tell you these because there are a lot of different options. It's normally the first thing I look for when I show up at a lake is what does the water look like, clear, stained or muddy. What is the cover grass, wood or structure? Match your baits the same way.
But sometimes something black and blue will catch them any where.
Some of my favorite colors are:
Black & Blue
June Bug
Fire & Ice (works great during hot summer time on schooling fish)
Watermelon
Watermelon Red
Watermelon purple
Green pumpkin
Green pumpkin purple
Black berry
Tomato

The best all around bait that I have success year round on is a watermelon blue baby brush hog. Look up how to Texas rig your soft plastics and go from there.
Cast near a tree in the water or any other obstructions, and let it fall to the bottom. Be sure you keep your line tight. A fish hitting the bait will most of the time feel like a series of bumps. When you feel these bumps grab your rod with both hands and jerk hard straight up to set the hook. (I literally try to kill a fish setting the hook) Keep tension on the fish and you usually won't loose them. What lake are you fishing in cenla and I may be able to give you some more specifics.

This, but I would pick up a bag of senkos, lizards, and trick worms to go with it, in watermelon red of course.
