Has she ever taken anything larger than a rabbit? (opossum, coon, fox, etc)
She caught a small possum a while back. I hope she never tries a coon or a fox. Too much risk with either of those.
I may have already posted the possum photo, but here it is.

Incredible stuff. What is the purpose of the blinders?

So she can't see. ;)
It keeps them calm. Keeps them from trying to fly off to a better perch. Keeps them from grabbing the dead squirrel beside them. Etc. Basically, they think it's night - if they can't see they think nothing can see them.

When you release a bird does it find it's way to your house and hang around?
I had a nest behind my house in the top of a pine tree that different hawks and owls raised in for probably 5 years. Once two of the hatchlings on the day they started flying flew down to a rail on my back porch and set for some time.
A Great Horned Owl spent the winter in the nest one year.

Nah, unless you release them at your house, they go wherever and establish a territory. It may be where they're released, or it may be many miles away.
Cool about the raptors nesting near your house. I watch the red tails on the Cornell nest cam sometimes.

Do you know anybody in La. that hawks or have any contacts over in the BR area? I'd like to check out the process and see if my interest gets peaked enough to commit to set up for next year maybe
Years ago a red-tail that would sit an oak in the corner of the yard and wait for the barn cat to finish torturing mice and rats so he/she could get a free meal. I've got one now that will get a chicken, 3 in the last few weeks, if I leave them out unattended.
Cool birds. I have always loved to watch them.

Also, Rusty Scarborough could probably point you towards a master falconer in the Baton Rouge area. Although he is based out of the Shreveport area, he probably has contacts of those near Baton Rouge.
Caddo Parish Naturalist
Years ago, the Louisiana Hawking Club was fairly active and would have state falconry meets. I think they came more disbursed and isolated after then. At one time there was a pretty well established core group of falconers in the Baton Rouge area.

Sorry, just saw this. I don't think there's a very organized club in louisiana, but there are falconers down there.
I can't access facebook at work, but try doing a search on there for "Michael Beran Falconry". He should be able to hook you up with someone near you.

Teague, she was all over that prey. So you just walk to follow her and see what she jumps? SHe's like a friction' guided missile when she sees a target.

No, I walk and jump stuff and she follows me. She'd already missed this squirrel a few minutes before and we both lost sight of where it went. I started walking around the general area trying to get it to move again. I saw her looking in a particular direction, so I knew she'd seen him move. Started that direction and that's where the video picks up.

Cool vid.
Its amazing once you get tuned into something how the mind never quits. On the ride to work this evening I saw 4 redtails perched up on the roadside. 2 I've seen within a few hundreds of the same place quite a few times, but today I spotted 2 new ones. I need to start leaving a little early and pack the binoculars and camera.

A couple of years ago I had a redtail hawk nesting in my woods. I was outside chipping some golf balls and the hawk glided in from my back and hit me in the head. I found the nest and stayed away. About two weeks later I was trying to get my dog to come back from chasing some deer in the woods. The hawk did the same move but this time clawed both sides of my head...blood running down my ears. Ha..my wife would not even go out on the deck the rest of the spring...
