There are two things that seem like they would be nice to have that I will not buy.
1. Boat. Chartering a boat is way cheaper than owning a boat unless you use it every week multiple days per week. There is also the advantage if you are chartering a boat that you can charter different style boats for different applications.
2. An RV. Same thing, unless you use it every week it is cheaper to get a hotel or rent a RV when you need one. If it is just you and the wife you have different requirements then if it is the whole clan.
A wise man in the Caribbean (something about the statute of limitations) once gave me some sage advice...if it floats, fricks or flies rent it don't buy it!

Another word of caution....if you own an RV and do not do the maintenance yourself not only is it extremely expensive but it is also extremely difficult to get an appointment. I am talking about months out, especially if you are not a regular customer and it ain't a dire emergency, and if it is you will pay through the nose to "bump" up the list.
My MH generator has been a problem since day one...like all gas RV generators which are fed from the vehicle fuel system....it is a pain in the arse to do anything to so I would gladly pay anything to have someone work on it....the problem is very few RV shops have a true Onan Mechanic and are merely small engine mechanics with some Onan experience so they don't know much about them...and do not care much for doing so because they are so damned hard to get to. That being the situation it often takes 90 days or so to get the thing in the shop....and I usually bit the bullet and cuss the damned thing and fix it myself. RV repairing is a HUGE business and is one that a person could go into on a small budget, make it a portable one, and make a damn good living if they were capable of doing the work....

Go on Outdoorsy.com. They rent them all over the country. I would rent one first. Just my $.02.

What are some of the better brands to buy in the 30' range with bunks? Wife has talked me into getting one. We have 2 grandkids that will tag along most of the time

I grew up in a family of 6 and we did camping in a travel trailer as our main source of vacationing. I'm over 50 now and still have great memories of all our camping trips.
With that said, I don't know how my friggin' parents survived it. God bless them, cause it takes a special kind of patience to take a 4 young kids camping all the time!!

Rent first.
In the boat analogy , staying at hotels is always cheaper.

Nothing
Nothing by Forest River. They're pretty well known to be garbage. Look at Nash, Lance, and Arctic Fox. Of course Airstream is good too. I have friends who bought a Winnebago travel trailer, a Mini Winnie, I think, and they said it hasnt had too many issues over the 7 yrs they've owned it.
I'd stay away from slides and all that as I hear they leak and break often

Bought one earlier this year and it was a great decision.
My kids beg me to go camping every weekend, they romp around campsites and don’t touch technology the whole time.
Only issue is getting campsites. Covid has made camping extremely popular.
