Storing a vehicle - battery issues

When storing a vehicle, or particularly keeping an extra vehicle for emergencies, is there anything special that should be done? The reason I ask is that I have had two vehicles' batteries die while I was storing them.

The first was brought over from Hawaii and had this anti-corrosion thing under the hood that was hooked to the battery and may have been draining the battery. I replaced that battery and it was dead again within a month or two. I got a new battery, kept it disconnected and it was fine later.

The second, my wife's old vehicle, has been in our garage for about a year and I had last taken it out about 6 months ago. Battery was dead when I tried to start it last month, but I noticed that I had kept a GPS unit plugged in and thought maybe that drained the battery. I jumped it and ran it a bit but had to jump it again today. Measured at 7 volts (should be 12) at the shop, had to get a new battery. Crazy thing is, they (Sam's club) couldn't install the new battery for me and couldn't jump it, neither could AAA. I got it towed home and changed the battery out myself. Incidentally, I tried jumping it myself again and was able to using one of those new small portable batteries that can jump vehicles.

So should I just keep the battery disconnected? Should I just try to take the vehicle out every few months? Also, it's an old Mercedes and the car is bugging me about us being overdue for service by like 230 days. Do you guys still recommend taking it in for routine service if I'm just taking it out for a few miles every several months? Thanks for any replies.

Use a battery tender when storing?

Disconnect, use a battery tender while disconnected and run every few months. Should last several years if you do those 3 things.

I basically put my F-150 into storage in my garage for 4+ years and I learned that a good battery tender is worth the money, those cheap ones they sell at Autozone and others are junk, never lasted a full year and damn near cost me a battery. Deltran or the higher end Schumacher automatic battery maintainers are worth the extra cost. You want to make sure anything that can cause a parasitic drain on the battery is turned off or taken out.

with today's vehicles, there is always some small drain on the battery to keep things going (i.e. clock, alarm, and other electronics) that will eventually run a battery down. as some of the others mention, get yourself a decent quality trickle charger and even then, only plug it in for a day every week or so...I have even put the trickle charger on a timer to run one hour per day before.

You don't need to do that with the better ones. The shut off completely as needed and still monitor the battery. Keeps things more consistent for the battery and no chance of forgetting to plug it back in.

Thanks, sounds like a battery tender is my solution. Regarding selling it, it's probably worth more to me as an extra vehicle than what I'd get for it. Nearly 200k miles on a lower class Mercedes is apparently worth next to nothing.

Yep. Since I was in college my dad has always kept an extra vehicle. Comes in very handy a good bit. Saved me on rentals and when someone needs to haul something. Just keeps liability on it and drives it once a week to work and running errands.

So I’ve gotten my battery tender (Deltran) now. Some reviews that I’ve read say that they leave the cables connected to the battery and just unplug the unit from the cables if they need to use the vehicle. Does it not get too hot under the hood for the cables if the engine’s running?

Are any of the other plastic and rubber parts melting under the hood? Just use some zip ties to run the lead away from any moving parts or exhaust plumbing if necessary.
