I know deer dogs aren’t allowed, curious if squirrel or rabbit dogs are allowed on Kisatchie? Any good inputs on good dogs like that? I live in the city now but grew up with a black mouth cur. Seems maybe that wouldn’t go well with my neighbors as my old one barked a lot. I have a backyard but only 3/4 an acre

I guess my second question is what’s a good rabbit dog and or squirrel dog that can live in the city. I have time to take out to woods often and walk every day

Get a mix. Half rat terrier, half mountain tree feist.

Typically looks like a Minpin....fast as frick with a helluva prey drive.

I had neighbors that raised squirrel dogs. The dad drove an old VW beetle through the woods in Kisatchie chasing his dog. I was always amazed where that little car could go.

it’s amazing how predatory the little terrier mixes are. I have a street pickup that has cleared our 6 acres of all vermin, mammal or otherwise

heard her barking out in the yard the other night she had a dead copperhead in her mouth

Anyone aware if you can run rabbit or squirrel dogs on Kisatchie? I’ve tried to call today but didn’t get an answer

I went a couple times with a buddy. His granddad lived up there . I ended up buying a dog from him. It’s allowed , don’t remember where.
On a side note, that is one of the worst times I have ever been lost in the woods. If it wasn’t for the dogs we may still be walking around. That place is huge.

From their FAQ:

quote:

3) What kind of hunting dogs can I use on KNF?
Waterfowl, quail, dove, and woodcock hunting - recognized bird-dog breeds. Squirrel hunting - any breed of dog. Rabbit hunting - beagles which do not exceed 15 inches at the front shoulder. No dogs can be used for hunting or chasing any species on a deer still-hunting day. See National Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve and National Catahoula Wildlife Management Preserve regulations for details on additional rabbit and squirrel dog restrictions.
